MIDI Repository
Back in the dialup days I spent a lot of time looking for and listening to MIDI arrangements of video game soundtracks. Eventually I took to making my own, by listening to favorite tracks over and over again and trying to transcribe them by ear. I have learned nothing new since those days, either about music composition in general or about how to use MIDI editors effectively. You have been warned.
Video Game Arrangements
- These Seas are Mine
- The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
- Brass, strings, percussion
- Probably my most tryhard arrangement to date. I finished this version in 2018, but I've got drafts dating back to 2016 and earlier... I spent a lot of time picking at it! The [spoilers] section took the longest to come together. Anyway, generally being a proponent of taking things that aren't in 6/8 and making them be in 6/8, here's Linebeck's theme in 6/8. A cameo from the LttP dungeon theme too, on harpsichord.
- Untitled
- Paper Mario
- Saxophones, trumpet, xylophone
- Twink's theme from the original Paper Mario is kind of annoying, but the basic tune isn't bad. I decided to change up the instrumentation a little (but in a Mario series-compatible way) and make it more listenable.
- Moneygrubba
- Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
- I was really proud of that hi-hat pattern at the time
- Original Paper Mario had Tubba Blubba's theme, which ruled. TTYD had Grubba's theme, regarding which I thought, "what if I swing the SNOT out of that, in homage to Tubba." Actually, both original themes are way better than this arrangement, but one lives and one learns.
- Steam Garden Blues (WIP) (May 2022)
- Super Mario Odyssey
- This one needs lyrics about... I dunno, a broken engagement. Or a hat. Odyssey is a game about wedding planning and hats.
- I attempted jazz chords for once.
- Raine's Theme (New October 2022)
- Tales of Symphonia
- Panflute, strings, percussion
- I normally hype Sakuraba for his dungeon and battle themes, but every now and then he will also knock it out of the park with a more thoughtful/ethereal character theme. Raine's theme is so heavily pentatonic that I've always wanted to hear it on more traditional East Asian instruments.
Original Stuff (But Video Game Flavor)
Locations
- Untitled 21
- Oboe, strings
- Some type of dungeon where you're moving around in between light and shadowed areas. I think monster encounters are pretty sparse. Maybe you're learning some Deep Lore. Who knows.
- Untitled 18 (WIP)
- Brass, sax, flute, percussion
- I don't know what place this is. I had just been replaying Super Mario Galaxy, though, and you can tell.
- Untitled 52, old filing system
- Double reeds, strings, clarinet
- Man I need to start naming things. Anyway, this is a super old one, and I'd do the percussion differently if I were doing it today. But I still like the vibes of An Evil Nobleman Lives Here.
- Fall Town (New October 2022)
- Double reeds, percussion
- It's a town theme. I think it's got pretty tall buildings. The B section plays when you're indoors?
Characters
- Untitled 15
- Most of an orchestra
- This person takes themself pretty seriously.
- Untitled 25 (May 2022)
- t i m p a n i
- This person also takes themself seriously, but the narrative does not.
Fights
- Untitled 15 [BOSS FIGHT] (WIP)
- Guitar, slap bass, orchestra, Motoi Sakuraba vibes
- I took theme 15 from above and went, like, Tales boss fight on it. And that's that.
- Untitled 13 (WIP)
- Synths, bassoon, tomfoolery
- This boss is just messing with you. Why won't they stop levitating and get down here for an honest fight. Seriously.
- Some Quirky Miniboss BS (WIP) (May 2022)
- A hopeless amount of timpani
- That weirdo from #25 has also decided to fight you, possibly on a recurring basis. This may take a while.
Cutscenes
- Untitled 19
- Strings, brass
- It's too late to stop whatever evil plan this is.
Original Stuff (Some Other Flavor)
- Luc's Theme
- Clarinet, piano
- I don't know if all cats have leitmotifs, but mine did. In memory of a cool little dude, ca. 2004 - 2020.
- Untitled 5 (WIP?)
- Electric guitars, bass, strings
- One day I decided to write a rock song. I have never done this before or since. The bridge is... surprisingly cool? The chord progression needs work and it still needs an ending. Maybe I'll get back on that at some point.
- Untitled Jig
- Reeds, brass, percussion
- At one point I was trying to learn the mandolin, and I wrote a couple jigs and a couple reels because why wouldn't you. Granted, this one has some introductory messing around too.
- Untitled Reel
- Reeds, fiddle, percussion
- It was a toss-up whether to put this here or list it as some kind of Location or Cutscene.
